The Legend of the Dragon's Tear

Mt Fuji 2.jpg

Long ago, in a quiet mountain village wrapped in cedar and mist, there lived a small boy named Takeshi.

His name meant “brave warrior.” But, Takeshi did not feel brave.

He was gentle, thoughtful… more at home beside his grandfather than among the other boys.

His grandfather, once a great sea captain, now had hands that trembled, and pain lived deep in his joints like winter that would not leave.  A pain that no hearth fire could fully chase away.

Each evening, while Grandfather would retell his tales, Takeshi would sit with him, warming oil-soaked cloths and pressing them softly over his stiffened hands.

“If I were stronger,” Takeshi once whispered, “I would carry this pain for you.”

Grandfather only smiled.

One twilight, while gathering herbs at the forest’s edge, Takeshi met an old woman with silver hair and eyes that seemed to see far beyond the moment.

Some in the village called her a witch.  Most simply left her alone.

She watched Takeshi carefully. “You tend to pain that is not your own,” she said.

Takeshi lowered his eyes. “It belongs to someone

I love.” The old woman nodded.

“There is a remedy,” she said quietly. “But I cannot make it… not alone.”

Takeshi looked up.

“In the high mountains lives an ancient dragon,” she continued. “Its fire is not destruction — but life, warmth, and deep earthly heat. From it comes something rare… something I cannot collect nor conjur.”

“What is it?” he asked.

“A single tear.

She leaned closer, her voice barely above a whisper.

“A dragon will not give its tear to one who seeks power… or glory… or even healing for themselves. It can only be given freely—drawn forth by true love.”

She studied him as his emotions and the realization of what she'd said registered in his eyes. He said nothing, but simply nodded while his thoughts and a plan quickly came together.

The next morning, just before dawn, Takeshi began his journey.  He climbed through forests, across rivers, and into the cold silence of the mountains. His body tired.  His feet ached.  But his purpose did not waver.

At last, he found the dragon—resting within a cave that glowed like living ember.

It was immense… and ancient beyond measure.

Takeshi’s heart pounded, but he remembered his name. Not strength. Not size.

Bravery.

He stepped forward and bowed deeply.

“I have come on behalf of someone else,” he said.

The dragon opened its eyes.  “You carry no fear of death,” it rumbled.

Takeshi shook his head. “I carry the burden of watching someone I love remain in pain.”

Silence filled the cave.

Then the dragon lowered its great head, studying the boy with ancient understanding.

“Love,” it said, “is the only force that can ask this of me.”

At that moment, a single tear formed—glowing like molten gold—and fell. Takeshi caught it carefully in a small vial.

When he returned, the old woman was waiting.

“You see now,” she said gently, “why I could not gather this myself.”

Together, they began the work. She crushed roots that held the earth’s warmth… steeped leaves that soothed the body… and blended resins known to ease what time had stiffened.

Finally, she added the single dragon’s tear.

The mixture came alive with a gentle, radiant warm glow.

“This,” she said, handing it to Takeshi, “is not made from fire alone… but from love and devotion.”

That night, Takeshi rubbed the balm into his grandfather’s hands. The warmth spread slowly—deep, steady, and lasting. For the first time in many years, the old man closed his fingers… without pain.

It is said that this remedy has been passed down ever since

And that the dragon still watches from the mountains…

waiting for another heart brave enough to love so deeply.
